One of the animal kingdom's most interesting defenses comes from the
skink lizard.
This little critter will drop off its tail to escape a predator. While the
predator eats his tail, the skink lizard runs for his life.
Discarding parts can be painful, but it always presents opportunity. What
about the crazy idea you've
been forever turning over in your head? What part of it isn't working? Why
not drop it? Could you drop the whole thing? Or give it to somebody
else? That may not be a bad idea, especially if your idea flies. In our
idea-devouring society, whoever runs with your idea will have to have more.
And since they scored with your idea
who are they going to call?
You might even give an idea to one of your competitors. That's right. Just
make sure it's one of your average ideas. And while they're busy developing
it, you can run with a better one.
See how losing can lead to success? Not that you go looking for failure, but
when you do lose, you also test your commitment, re-evaluate your
possibilities, and regroup your forces.
Even the skink lizard knows that losing your rear end isn't necessarily the
end of the world.
